4.03 Water Conservation and Efficiency

  1. Residential Water Usage (Gallons per Capita) Trend:
The data from 2006 to 2023 shows a declining trend in residential water consumption per capita, from 137.6 gallons in 2006 to 97.6 gallons in 2023.
This represents a 28.3% decrease over the 17-year period, suggesting that water conservation measures and awareness have had a positive impact.
  2. Single-Family Gallons per Capita per Day (GPCD):
Data available from 2019 shows a slight increase from 170 GPCD in 2019 to 172 GPCD in 2020 but then a decline to 145.2 GPCD in 2022 and 145.4 GPCD in 2023.
Forecast for 2026 shows an increase to 160 GPCD.
  3. Multifamily GPCD:
Multifamily water use also shows a declining trend. It drops from 92 GPCD in 2019 to 81.2 GPCD in 2022 and 2023, with a forecasted decrease to 75 GPCD by 2026.
This indicates better water efficiency in multifamily residences.
  4. Landscape Water Usage (Gallons per Acre per Day - GPAD):
Landscape water usage peaked in 2020 at 3675.7 GPAD but has been decreasing, reaching 3300.8 GPAD in 2022 and 3328 GPAD in 2023.
Forecast data for 2026 shows a projected decrease to 3171 GPAD, signaling continued efforts to conserve water in outdoor landscapes.

Key Insights:

The overall trend shows significant reductions in water usage, particularly in the residential and multifamily sectors, which aligns with the city’s conservation goals.
Landscape irrigation remains high, though it is on a declining trajectory, indicating that outdoor water conservation is a key area for further improvement.
Single-family water usage is expected to rise slightly in the future, indicating that additional conservation efforts may be necessary in this sector to maintain the overall trend
